8 Hairstyles To Fight Summer Frizz

My hair doesn't do well in the summer.
The heat causes me to sweat which causes my hair to get ridiculously frizzy!
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem going natural and rocking my straight Afro.

But some times, I like to tame to the beast.

Doing my hair is something that I have been practicing since I was about 12 years old. I literally braid my hair with my eyes closed at this point. Though I have yet to master the art of hair styling completely, I enjoy trying out new things!

Here are 8 ideas for when the ponytail just won't work:

Loose fish tail brain with a black faux leather bow.

Traditional french braid.

Tight curved fishtail side braid with faux leather black bow

Another variation of the curved fish tail braid with a light blue ribbon instead of the black bow

French braid hybrid with turquoise clippies.

Half up half down with a color spotted white bow and pink clippies.

Bangs twisted and pulled back

Half up half down with black clippies keeping sides back

Potty Diaries: Introduction

Nico has always been a very intelligent and strong willed little guy. Once he decides he is ready for something, there is no stopping him. Though I have never wanted to rush him through milestones, I was not surprised when he took his first steps at 10 months, when he started climbing everything in sight at 12 months, or when he began to take an interest in the potty at 15 months. He began following my husband and I to the bathroom, flushing the toilet when he thought no one was looking, and telling me all about the contents of his dirty diaper. Though experts say these are all indicators of potty readiness, I still felt it was too early, and I didn't want to push my baby to grow up before his time. Instead we decided to take pre-potty steps.

A potty seat was the best option for our household because Nico was eager to sit on the toilet like mommy and daddy, and because we live in a single story house with easy bathroom access. I also liked the other benefits of the seat such as, portability, easy clean up, and space-saving storage. Each day, or maybe every other day, I would sit Nico on his potty seat (fully dressed) to get him used to the idea that one day he would be doing it all by himself.

Little did I know that day would come sooner rather than later

Nico decided he was ready all on his own. At about 18 months, he started taking off his diaper during nap time. Sounds innocent enough, right? There is no harm in being silly and or figuring out how to work the tabs on a diaper, unless there is something in that diaper. Imagine my shock and disgust when I walk in on my 1 and a half year old happily smearing his feces all over himself and his crib. Unfortunately, this was not a one time thing. Over the next couple months, Nico continued to make monumental messes, no matter what my husband and I did, and he was beginning to do it more frequently. I began asking the older mothers in my church when they started the potty process and they all advised me to waited until Nico was ready.

Well, when you know, you know

I still had my doubts since Nico was still 22 months old, not even 2 yet, but I couldn't take another nap time nightmare.

So, I made a potty plan:
  1. Stay home as much as possible during the day.
  2. Let Nico walk around with no diaper, and no pants. BIRTHDAY SUIT!
  3. Begin using undies when he has at least 2 days of no accidents in a row (this hasn't happened yet)
  4. Take the potty seat out with us when he finally does make the transition to undies.
Over the next few months I'll be writing a little series called Potty Diaries that will highlight misadventures of a first time mommy in Potty Land.
Follow us through all the ups and downs, and #1's and #2's!

Potty Diaries: Getting Started

To potty or not to potty?

It seems that's the next big question as our little ones make the transition from toddlers to big kids. And everyone has something to say about it. With half of your friends and family telling you to wait and the other half telling you it's about time you got started, it can be hard to know if or when your baby is ready.

The main question on my mind was, at what age is it appropriate to start toilet training
my son? After many hours of research I finally found my answer.

Despite what you may have heard, I found that there is no exact age to mark the beginning of the potty days; it all boils down to your baby. Is he or she ready? I found a POTTY READINESS QUIZ on pediatrics.about.com that might help you figure it out.

The next question is, are you ready? To begin the potty process you'll need a few supplies:

Potty Time Tools
A cleaning spray (maybe 2, for the accidents)
A large pack of paper towels
Potty seat or potty chair (pro/con list for both)
Baby wipes (for cleaning up beginners)
Training pants or undies
Diapers (yes, you'll still need diapers. our little ones still cannot be expected to stay dry at night or during naps)
A potty book for parents (optional but extremely helpful)
An online forum to turn to when you're at your wits end (no matter how calm you are when you start the process, I guarantee mild frustration on your part at some point. Knowing that others are going through the same things may help you feel a bit more relaxed and will motivate you to be patient and to not give up)

A few more things that experts suggest are videos and books to help your baby along. We decided to skip the videos, and although I originally planned to buy potty books, they didn't get there in time. So speaking by experience, I'd say it's okay to start without those as long as your little one understands what the toilet is, what it's for, and what to do on it.

Follow Nico and I as we take our first steps towards his childhood!
And I wish you the best of luck on your own Potty Journey!

On Being a Teen Mom

I found out I was pregnant when I was 18 years old. When I was 19 I gave birth to a handsome and very yummy gummy bear, Nico Isaac Alemán.  There is no end to my love for him or my husband; I could not imagine my life without them. That being said...

There is nothing glamorous about being a teenage mother. There is nothing cool about the ominous uncertainty we face. In fact, the only thing we can be certain of, is that we have absolutely NO IDEA what we are doing. No amount of articles can prepare a person for being pooped on in their favorite shirt, or tell you what to do when your 2 year old is screaming as you walk through isle after endless isle at the grocery store, cheerio necklace polished off long ago, or how to scoop something out of his mouth without having your finger ripped off. When you have a child between the ages of 15 and 19, you find yourself in an awkward position between two contrasting worlds.

We want the same things any young woman wants. To find love, to make life long friendships, to have fun, to discover who we're meant to be. We want the freedom to be able to make mistakes without being judged and scrutinized by the gaggle of people watching our every move from the moment we announce we're pregnant, or by those who think they are better than us because they didn't make the monumental "mistake" we did.

At the same time, we also want everything a mother wants. We want our kids to be happy, healthy, and well rounded, with strong values and good behavior. Like older moms, we want to be able to give our little ones everything they deserve in life and more! We try to be the perfect mommy, and we get discouraged because the other moms seem to have it all figured out.

In the place of perfection, we often find frustration. It is incredibly difficult to do something you don't know how to do. I some times find myself losing my patience with Nico, yelling at him when I don't mean to, longing for time to myself, or for something fun to do with my old friends. Instead, I struggle through the 5th tantrum of the day and think about how miraculous it is that I'm not bald from having my hair ripped out by his tiny hands.

There is an intense desire to be understood.
Being a teen mom can be lonely.

The other moms in our lives are older, many of them are married and planned for each one of their children. We don't have much in common with them besides the age of our kids. Sometimes, they are polite, nice even. They make small talk and give you good advice, but they don't try to schedule play date and they talk about real life amongst themselves because they assume we won't "get it." Sometimes, they look down on us for being younger, as if our circumstances somehow make us less of mother.

Most of the girls our age are on a different page all together. They're also nice, and they think ours babies are super cute, but they don't invite us to hang out. They might assume we will eventually ask them to babysit, or that we're too busy for trips to the mall. Evidently, it's impossible to enjoy themselves at all around a baby that is not theirs.

Dating is a forgotten pastime. It's weird to bring someone in to your baby's life who you aren't sure about, but that's not really a problem because there aren't many guys who are willing to date a girl with baby baggage. And even if you are married to/still with the father of your child, your relationship has changed in ways that no one really knows how to describe. The challenges of a serious monogamous relationship are many, and neither of you honestly realized how much work and time it needs to be nurtured and maintained.

Nope. Nothing could have possibly prepared us for the reality of motherhood.
Not even "Teen Mom"

However, through all of that, the one thing that makes everything worth while is the little life that is forever intertwined with yours. That adorable little face that smiles at you every morning. That complicated mini person that is impossible to completely figure out. The giggles and tickles and "I love you's", make up for all the judgmental glances, rude remarks, and never-ending Saturday night Netflix marathons. For me there is nothing better than when Nico learns something knew or gives me a kiss; I just melt in to a goopey puddle of love every time!

As a teen mom, my greatest accomplishment will always be my son.
My reward is watching him transform and evolve right before my eyes, from baby to man.
My advantage is being able to grow with him and having my whole life ahead of me to work towards my dreams, to show Nico that anything is possible as long as he decides it is.

It's okay if I am the only person who takes me seriously.
It's okay if the other girls don't want to be friends.
And the other moms can think whatever they want.

I am proud to be a teenage mom because it means that I was mature enough to make a difficult decision at a young age. I accepted the responsibility of my actions and I was wise enough to do the right thing.

To the other teen moms reading this today:
Don't be too hard on yourself, you're doing the best you can.
You are not alone. Someone out there understands.

Oh, and no body's perfect ;)
Yup, that's us :)

4 Everyday Outfit Ideas For Young Moms

Before I had Nico fashion was a big part of my life. I didn't shop everyday, but I had a pretty good collection of versatile pieces that I loved to mix and match! I loved to look good; who doesn't? But during the course of my pregnancy, through the morning sickness, bloating, and changes in my body, I lost sight of my style.

As a young mother, the changes of motherhood were sudden; one moment I find out I'm pregnant and the next thing I know, I'm blowing up like a balloon, hardly able to recognize myself.

I was fortunate to return to my normal size a few months after Nico was born, but inside, I had completely changed. I realized that the things I used to wear no longer expressed how I viewed myself; a young mother with large goals who wanted to be taken seriously while still feeling young and beautiful.

It took me a while to be comfortable in my own skin as the person I became when Nico was born, a Kul Mom
I can finally proudly say this is my style as a 20 something mommy!

4 fabulous everyday outfit ideas for young moms:

The Classic T-shirt and Flowy Skirt.

Comfortable white Keds because it's hard to chase a 2 year old in heels!

Accessories: Long Tangled Necklace, Sterling silver Ear Cuff

I LOVE mixing patterns! It adds an interesting twist to an outfit!

Comfortable Christmas Style!

We were invited to an awesome annual Christmas party where a bunch of old friends come together to celebrate the holidays!

This year I decided to skip the dress and go for a more semi-formal outfit, with non-obvious Christmas colors.

(A lacy white skirt, a tight Santa-red blouse, and a dark olive green button down shirt with black booties)

I spent about an hour braiding my hair.

And for my make-up I did dramatic eye-shadow, light silver to dark silver, blush, cover-up, mascara, and cat eyeliner.

The party turned out to be fun and exciting! I was comfortable and got to see old friends I had not seen in a long time, and they all complimented my Hot mom Christmas look!
