2 Major Benefits of Moving

Life is never more stressful than when you are planning to move. It seems like no matter how much we try to plan and organize, something always goes wrong. When the inevitable does finally happen we are left with 2 choices; forget the plan and stay where you are, or charge forward and take risks.

Pedro and I have decided to take the risk.

Pedro is always saying, "there is no growth in comfort." I completely agree with him, which is why our family is moving from Puerto Rico...

 to Raleigh, North Carolina.

We want to embrace the challenge and find new opportunities to grow as a family, as well as individuals.

Honestly, moving is exciting, but not all that fun. When the stress seems too overwhelming, it can help to remember the 2 major benefits of moving.
1. A chance to start over - there are very few times we are allowed to restart in life. If you are blessed enough to have such a chance take full advantage of it. Create fresh beautiful memories and allow yourself to be the person you've always wanted to be.

2. Problem Solving skills - This one was meant to be a little bit of a joke. If you have ever moved, you get it. There is no better example for Murphy's law than moving. You think you have it all figured out, but sooner or later you'll find yourself blindsided by something you didn't expect. Thankfully, you learn how to think on your feet!

Good luck to every brave soul who is also making an important life transition this year. Focus  on the outcome of the journey and the process becomes much easier!

Father's Day Gift Ideas

Dads can be the hardest people to shop for, but finding something just right doesn't have to be complicated! Sometimes the one thing holding us back from thinking of the perfect present, is thinking way too much.

The first step to finding the last minute gift of his dreams is taking a deep breath and remembering to keep it simple!

Favorites - Things to keep in mind when looking for something for dad are his favorites. Favorite color, band, vintage show, movie, superhero? A gift card to his favorite store in a meaningful card is guaranteed to win you that smile you love so much!

Books - There is no such thing as having too many books, and there is no such thing as a person who doesn't read. The question is what do they read? Comics, magazines, newspapers? Get your hubby a good thrilling read that he will greatly appreciate the next time he finds himself with a chunk of personal time.

Free Time - Speaking of time, it seems like Dads don't ever have enough of it! When my husband isn't working, he is doing a chore around the house or hanging out with Nico; he never really has a moment for himself. If that sounds like your hubby, a nice gift might be a night to himself. The night before his day off, pack up the kids and take them for an over night trip with you to Grandma's house, leaving your husband all alone for 24 hours of man time!

Nothing - The ultimate last minute gift is absolutely nothing! Make overnight arrangements for the little ones and spend the day doing nothing but watching his favorite movies/ shows, and eating his favorite junk food (don't forget the pizza!). Most importantly, spend the day wearing NOTHING AT ALL ;)

What Movies Make You Think

Everyday, millions of people watch millions of movies, all around the world. The film industry has one of the biggest influences on society. I mean, who doesn't love a good movie, right?

What most people do not realize however, is just how much their love of silver screen classics has molded their frame of mind and view of life.

Through this popular form of mass communication, any kind of behavior or idea can be implemented. This is where we get our ideas about romance and love, gender roles, and even acceptable human interactions. The cult classic Mean Girls, for example, led us to believe that emotional bullying in an intolerable act that will have negative effects on everyone involved, including the bullies. While the Disney animated feature Mulan, taught young girls everywhere that you do not have to be a boy to be a hero.

Public displays of affection became popular because of the way romance was portrayed in early cinema in the mid to late 60's. Not only that, but because of films like Rebel Without a Cause youths began to question the very idea of happiness and began to pull away from the roles society had pushed on them.

Unfortunately, not all films share the same positive outlook of life. Movies like Jaws, which was meant to entertain, inspired an entire country's irrational fear of sharks. On the other hand, many real underground fight clubs sprouted shortly after the release of David Fincher's critically acclaimed film Fight Club.

Many studies show that watching increasingly violent films can desensitize the mind to real life violence. Meaning that we find blood, gore, and aggression more acceptable, which is UNACCEPTABLE! (pardon the redundancy)

Though is sounds silly, many people let Hollywood dictate how they live their lives. In many cases, instead of movies portraying reality, reality portrays movies. Among the most tragic examples of this is the death of young Mickey Culpepper, who lost his life at the age of 23 by playing Russian Roulette with friends shortly after watching the film The Deer Hunter.

I am not saying that movies kill people. They DO NOT!

The real danger posed by the film industry is that people are no longer thinking for themselves. Instead of provoking thought, films are implanting thoughts. It seems like now they tell us what to wear, who to love, what to buy, where to eat, how to interact with one another, and even how we should be having sex!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Movies are meant to inform and entertain, NOT to influence and manipulate.

The next time you sit down to watch the latest box office hit, don't just consider how it makes you feel, be aware of WHAT IT IS MAKING YOU THINK.

3 Hacks to Have a Better Monday

Many people have one thing in common; they hate Mondays. This early day of the week is dreaded by almost everybody. It is said to be the start of the mundane routines and tasks of daily life, school, work, etc.

 happy monday dog

Many people have a negative frame of mind when it comes to this day. By changing how we perceive Mondays we can all come to enjoy them more. Changing a mindset is not always easy, but these 3 easy Monday hacks will make the transition seamless!

1. Do something nice for someone else: Make it your mission to find one favor you can do for another person where you are receiving nothing in return. It could be anything from buying a homeless person a bottle of water to planning a nice surprise dinner for your significant other. Being kind to others for no reason is scientifically proven to make you feel better! Don't believe me? Google it!

2. List 5 things that you are grateful for: If you already do this you are ahead of the game! For the rest of us, take the time right after we wake up to say "thank you" for a few of the things we normally take for granted. If you're drawing a blank, you can start with your bed and your beautiful smile! =D

3. Do one thing differently: Change up your daily routine a little! Shake up your day! Make yourself  a new food for lunch, or better yet set up a lunch date! Do you hair differently, where a bright new color; if you really want to get crazy, go to a movie after lunch!

There is usually nothing to look forward to on a Monday, but I think it's time we take it back and turn it into an early Friday!

The Most Important Job In the World

There is a lot of controversy concerning the most esteemed job position in the country.

Most people would tell you that the President of the United States holds that title, because he is in charge of managing all of the big things that effect the seemingly mundane day-to-day life of the general public. Others would argue that the real power lies with those who have the most money; the CEOs of the corporations, who seem to have a foot in every door. Others still, would say that entertainers and athletes are vital to keeping us distracted from the stress of daily situations and lifting our spirits throughout the hardships we'll inevitably face.

Though those jobs are important, and the people who do them appreciated and recognized accordingly, there is one position that towers high above the rest. It is a job that, if we were fully informed of the requirements, hardly anyone would apply, let alone qualify, for.

If you guessed, parent, you are correct.

It is the most difficult thing a human being can do; the most incredibly ridiculous task that God bestows upon the ones He feels He can trust with the most prized possession in the Universe: a child.

Here is what the job description would look like:

Now hiring: well rounded individual available to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be on call during all hours of the day. Must be punctual, responsive, honest, responsible, and work well under stress, pressure, and little to no sleep. Candidate must be 100 percent selfless, putting the needs of the designated new human before their own regardless of the circumstances. Problem solving skills and extreme patience are required, the candidate should also know basic first aid and must be able to effectively and efficiently manage emergency situations. Position listed requires superior organizational skills and the ability to multitask; experience in management is a plus. Love of music, exercise, and reading, basic psychological training, and basic cooking skills are preferred but not required. Above all, candidate must be loving, gentle and stern when needed, loyal, protective, dedicated, hard working, be able to persevere through nearly impossible odds, and expect the unexpected in any given place, at any given time. Must be willing to work for love that may or may not be unconditional depending on your new human.
No further compensation will be offered.

Does that sound like something you would be up for?

If we are speaking honestly, most of us would say no pretty quick.

Being a parent is not for the faint of heart, and parents do not get nearly enough recognition or the respect they deserve. The job description basically describes a perfect person, and we are all very far from perfect. It seems like we are the group that is most criticized and scrutinized. Society is constantly watching and evaluating how we chose to raise the beautiful little creations we were blessed with, as if we were all given manuals the day they were born!

But the real question is, why are people paying so much attention?

Answer: parents are responsible for laying the foundation of the future.

We raise doctors, teachers, engineers, environmental activists, missionaries, pastors, judges, members of congress, CEOs, entertainers, athletes, and for a select few, future presidents of the country.

Every decision that we make regarding what we teach those little guys directly effects what our home will look like in the next 30 years. I still remember a campaign from elementary school where we learned the importance of taking care of the planet; to this day everyone I know turns off the water while brushing their teeth, which was one of the main things they taught us.

Unfortunately, most people think that because we have a well established public school system, the job of education is the responsibility of the government, but that is far from the truth. For starters, children learn everywhere, the first place being at home. You truly will be your kid's first teacher, whether you intend to teach them or not. What you do, they do, and how they act is based on a behavior they observed from the adults in their life. And secondly, once your child is of age for school, they will begin to learn what the government wants them to know, some of which are things that you do not agree with. The problem with that, is that the government is interested is raising citizens to fit in to society, which is not wrong. I am a product and a fan of the public school systems, but I can rest easy knowing that my son will learn the most important life lessons after school with me.

Ask yourself this: would you rather a child built by society or a society built by your child?

Your first thought when you picture a society constructed by your 3 year old, is probably a world where veggies have been outlawed, and streets are paved with edible candy tar so we can eat on the go. The thing to keep in mind is that they won't be 3 forever. Someday, their ideas will make sense, and people will actually take them seriously.

Parents have the power to create a culture in which everyone respects the rights of others, the hungry are fed instead of left to resort to negative means of providing a meal for themselves, and the weak and soft spoken are taken care of instead of taken advantage of.

The job of a PARENT is the most important IN THE WORLD because we set the stage for how life will play out for generations to come.

It is not to be taken lightly.

And those of us who are not parents (yet) still have the responsibility of being understanding of those who are doing an impossible job, and of being a good example to those little eyes that seem to notice everything!

Our future is in his tiny hand!

Build Your Own Doors!

All throughout my life I was always told to be mindful of open doors. My parents and teachers told me to keep my eyes and ears alert because opportunities are everywhere. As a result, I did my best in school to make sure that when those opportunities presented themselves, I might be "the chosen one." However, through my experience I have realized how unproductive that way of thinking is.

We should always strive to be our best, but because everyone is so different, my best is not the same as your best, which creates advantages in certain situations. But me being better than someone at something doesn't necessarily mean that I am more deserving than them, or vice-versa.

If given the chance I feel that we can ALL be great at doing what we love. Not only that, but we can actually make our dreams a reality without having to rely on anyone but ourselves!

You will be surprised how successful you can be by asking yourself 3 simple questions:

STEP 1: What do you want? - The problem that most people face is confusion and indecisiveness. We don't have what we want because we have no idea what we want! When you are wading through life with no general direction, you are at least 3 times as likely to be disappointed in old age. The first major decision you must make is how you want your life to turn out, or what kind of things you want to achieve.

STEP 2: How can you get it? - Once you know what you want to do, the next task would be creating a plan of action. This is usually where people give up. It is common to think that you are too poor, or not smart enough, or not skilled enough to do what you wish you could. I am here to tell you that there is always a way around a road block, and there is always an advantage to every situation. Over the summer when I had free time because I was not in school, I saw that as an opportunity to write a book. When I had the miscarriage, I saw my experience as an opportunity to share my story with other women passing through a similar experience in hopes of offering them support. When it comes to making a plan of action, the key word is PERSPECTIVE. If you have a positive open minded perspective, it becomes easier to find a path to your destiny, no matter your circumstances.

STEP 3: What does life look like now that you have it? - After you know what you want, and how you are going to get there, the next component is visualizing it. I recommend spending 15 minutes to an hour each day imagining what your life will be like once you are living up to your true potential. If you dream of traveling the world, but you lack the finances, find a way to travel on your budget (absolutely possible with so many resources available to us) and then visualize yourself on an airplane, or in front of the Eiffel Tower. Its like daydreaming on steroids! The mind is a powerful thing, not to be underestimated, that can make our life as amazing as we imagine it to be, with a little elbow grease of course.

The sky is the limit!
The only one who determines if you fail or succeed is YOU!

A Kul Kind of Valentine

Valentine's Day 2015 was cause for excitement and anticipation for people all across the country and in Puerto Rico.

Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, was out trying to get gifts that expressed their undying love to their significant other. The stores were full of white, red, and pink, balloons, chocolates, flowers!

However, after all was said and done, this V-day was very low key for this Kul Mom and her family.

It started out as most days do with my wonderful husband cooking up breakfast.

On the menu, egg, cheese, and roast beef sandwich!

And an ice cream cake for dessert! Sprinkles by yours truly.

After a pretty average morning, Pedro went off to work and I put Nico down for a nap.
I used my lovely 2 hours of Me Time on a Valentine's day make-over.

BEFORE
AFTER
Then, my date finally woke up!

Nico waited patiently while I got dressed...

He didn't look too bad himself!

And, after a thousand more pictures, we finally went to the park.

He took some selfies...

I took some selfies...

And overall it was a very simple day full of the best kind of love!
