Father's Day Gift Ideas

Dads can be the hardest people to shop for, but finding something just right doesn't have to be complicated! Sometimes the one thing holding us back from thinking of the perfect present, is thinking way too much

The first step to finding the last minute gift of his dreams is taking a deep breath and remembering to keep it simple!

Favorites - Things to keep in mind when looking for something for dad are his favorites. Favorite color, band, vintage show, movie, superhero? A gift card to his favorite store in a meaningful card is guaranteed to win you that smile you love so much!

Books - There is no such thing as having too many books, and there is no such thing as a person who doesn't read. The question is what do they read? Comics, magazines, newspapers? Get your hubby a good thrilling read that he will greatly appreciate the next time he finds himself with a chunk of personal time.

Free Time - Speaking of time, it seems like Dads don't ever have enough of it! When my husband isn't working, he is doing a chore around the house or hanging out with Nico; he never really has a moment for himself. If that sounds like your hubby, a nice gift might be a night to himself. The night before his day off, pack up the kids and take them for an over night trip with you to Grandma's house, leaving your husband all alone for 24 hours of man time!

Nothing - The ultimate last minute gift is absolutely nothing! Make overnight arrangements for the little ones and spend the day doing nothing but watching his favorite movies/ shows, and eating his favorite junk food (don't forget the pizza!). Most importantly, spend the day wearing NOTHING AT ALL ;)

Easy Last Minute DIY Father's Day Gift (Toddler Friendly!)

This year is my husband Pedro's second Father's Day!

His second Father's Day is equally as significant as his first, because our son, Nico, is finally old enough to help me continue the tradition of the DIY Father's Day present!

 22 months old

Last year, I created a little picture book explaining what made Pedro the best father in the world.

It was kind of last minute, but I was able to put together something that he could look at on a bad day, or when he needed something to make him smile.

This year since I already had an idea, I put much more thought and time into his gift, and I was able to make him something just as personal as the first, but a bit more practical......

DRUM ROLL PLEASE!

A wooden picture frame!

Painting is a wonderful toddler friendly activity! Not only does it help little ones develop fine motor skills and creativity, it's a great time to teach colors!

Not to mention, painting a picture frame is a simple activity for busy Kul Moms that takes 30 minutes or less! The small frame cost less than 10 dollars at Walmart, along with the paint and paint brushes. And the newspapers were free, making this activity affordable on virtually any budget!

Since Pedro's favorite color is green we started with a green base. Nico enjoyed aiming for the picture frame, but after a while, that turned out to be the last thing he wanted to paint.

CAUTION: This is activity is only for Kul Mom's who like to get messy!

While I finished the green base and painted the borders blue...

Nico smeared green paint all over his hands and in between his fingers. It turned out to be a wonderful sensory experience for him!

I added strokes of yellow before the paint was dry to give it a funky texture and painted the back of the frame a solid green.

I had a number of pictures that would have looked very nice in the frame but none that managed to send the right message.

This Father's Day, I wanted Pedro to know that I appreciate him as a dad, and also that I am in love with him as a dad. When we were dating, I used to sketch pictures for him all the time and write songs and poems about how I couldn't be without him. My heart was seeping love and it had to be expressed! I need him to know that I still feel that way, more now than ever! He is not the boy I fell in love with. He has turned into an incredible man who means more to me than anyone will ever know.

I drew him a new picture to show him that I cherish the bond he has with our son, and that I still love everything about who he is.

A Very Kul Christmas

This year was one of the best Christmas' that I have had since I was a kid!

I only received 3 presents (they were all absolutely perfect) from my wonderful husband, Pedro, but Christmas is not about presents, it is about sharing the love Jesus showed us when he was born in to this world.

It is about spending time with the people you love the most, and showing them how much you care about them!

Nico got 6 presents this year, 4 from Mama and Daddy, 1 from Abi, and 1 from church! His Grandma (he calls her Abi, short for abuela) helped him unwrap them.

While my brother watched idly from the couch.

this was his face when he realized that he had gotten mostly BOOKS!

When we finished brunch and opened presents, we all went to visit Pedro's dad for a few hours, before my mom and my brother dropped us off at home.

This year for dinner, I roasted a DELICIOUS Christmas chicken.

Before eating, we all went skateboarding at the park near the house! Nico had a great time skating with Mommy and Daddy!

And then we FINALLY ate.

I feel so blessed this year because God gave me an amazing son and husband, he provided us with a home, and food to eat every night, and I know that it will only get better from here!

God truly is good all the time!

6 Things to Consider When Expecting...

So, you found out you are expecting a child!

Congratulations!

Babies are the most wonderful little creatures on Earth, as you will soon discover.

But, now what?

Maybe, you don't really know that much about pregnancy or parenthood, or maybe, people have shared a few specific details from their personal experiences. Maybe, you have done a lot of research and you know everything about what  happens to a woman's body during those 9 months.

While it's important to know those things, there are somethings that you will only come to understand throughout the pregnancy.

It is an uncomfortable time for some women, very uncomfortable. But for others, it is easy and it feels very natural. That is why I advise you to never compare your pregnancy to someone else. Every woman is completely different from another therefore the same goes for pregnancy.

Know that you have options. Everyone can tell you otherwise, but it is your body and only you know what is ultimately best for you. It is an enormous responsibility to have some one around who depends on you for everything.

Make sure you are willing to love some one more than you love yourself.  Being a parent is the most selfless thing you can ever do.

You will need a lot of emotional support. You need some one around who will try to understand what you are going through, to pamper you, and tell you how amazing you are for carry a life into the world. Make sure you find that person! Or make sure you are that person!

You don't have to take everyone's advice. Everyone will have something to say to you about what you are going through. They all think that their way is the best way. I think that your way is the best way. God blessed us all with children that only we know how to deal with specifically.

The most important thing is love. LOVE LOVE LOVE! If you are nervous about how you will do as a parent, just love them. For who they are, for everything that they are, and make sure that you let them know it!

Sunday Dinner

Family meals should always be an important time for sharing your lives and bonding with your family. That does not mean that is has to be a serious time of deep conversation and reflection (though it can be); the important thing is that you spend time interacting with one another.

It seems that all the technological advances over the years have resulted in children being more attached to the internet or video games then to their own parents.

Dinner time can be a time to interrupt the constant distraction of electronics.

TURN EVERY THING OFF!!

And sit down to eat together, at least one meal a day where everyone is at the table.
Cooking a meal for your family does not have to be a time consuming and tedious task! Quick, simple meals can leave your family pleasantly surprised, entertained, and satisfied!

This week, make your Sunday Dinner special by trying Asparagus and Sausage Carbonara

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 lb thin asparagus, trimmed and cut into 3-inch pieces (about 2 cups)
  • 2 large shallots, sliced
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper, divided, plus additional to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 3-oz links all-natural, cooked chicken sausage, diced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 8 oz whole-wheat spaghetti
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Meanwhile, in a large nonstick skillet on medium-high, heat oil. Add asparagus, shallots, salt and 1/8 tsp pepper and sauté for about 4 minutes, stirring frequently, until lightly browned. Add 1/3 cup water and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, until asparagus is crisp-tender and liquid evaporates. Reduce heat to low, add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until garlic has softened, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a medium bowl.
  2. Increase heat to medium and add sausage to skillet. Cook for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until lightly browned and heated through. Add to bowl with asparagus.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk eggs. Stir in 1/4 cup cheese and 1/8 tsp pepper; set aside. To boiling water, add pasta and cook al dente according to package directions. Drain and return pasta to pot, off of the heat. Immediately add egg mixture to hot pasta and stir vigorously until thickened and creamy, about 1 minute. Add asparagus mixture and stir to combine. Season with additional pepper. Divide among serving bowls, top with remaining 1/4 cup cheese, dividing evenly.
**I used a Turkey Keilbasa sausage instead of a chicken sausage. Pedro and Nico both LOVED this!! I recommend it for anyone who is trying to convince their kids that veggies can be super yummy!**

Buen Provecho! =)

Batman and Robin!

Father & Me Friday!

It has been a while, but I finally got some pictures out of them!

These were taken on Date Night. We decided that though it is important to have time alone (after the baby went to sleep) it is also important to have family dates as well. We ALL got dressed up nice and went on a trip across the island to the restaurant we ate at when we got lost there on my birthday!

It was a wonderful idea and a great day!

Miscarriage & Me: A Long Week in Hell

Many young mothers go through this, but not enough of us can talk about it. I hope that sharing my experience will help someone feel like they are not alone.

I honestly thought something like this could not happen to me. It might sound cliché, but I figured that being young and healthy gave me a lower risk of miscarriage. The unfortunate truth is that one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage and it can happen to anyone.

When you see people go through it on television it's different, almost glamorized, when compared to the crushing reality of true pain. The actress might spend a few hours, or maybe the night in the bathroom, withering in pain, but in the next scene they have gone on to cope emotionally with lots of support from their loved ones. Because everyone has a different experience, this may have been the case for some women, but it was not the case for me.

I never suspected that I was pregnant in the first place. I had missed a period, but since I had recently stopped breastfeeding Nico, I dismissed it as a sign that my body was trying to get back to normal. It wasn't until a few days of morning sickness that it occurred to me to take a home test. Three tests later, we were sure that I was pregnant, again. I was having mini panic attacks; Nico was still in diapers, he did not know how to talk, Pedro was working a second job with his father, and we were trying to save money to move. My family was not ready for a second baby. For a while I remember thinking that I did not want to be pregnant. I know that this was not my fault in any way, and that I didn't do anything to deserve it, but now I understand the saying, be careful what you wish for.

When I started bleeding on Wednesday night, I was afraid that something might be wrong, but I was not feeling pain. Everyone told me that a miscarriage included intense cramps, so I assumed that it was a strange part of this pregnancy. On Thursday it seemed like the bleeding was getting worse, and I was still getting sick in the mornings so I decided to pack up Nico and walk to the local medical center, a short distance from our apartment. The doctor did an extremely uncomfortable pelvic exam and a pregnancy blood test that came back positive a few hours later. He told me that he was going to call an ambulance to have me transferred to a hospital that had an emergency room especially for pregnant women.

In my mind, it was all so unnecessary. Pedro had to come home from work early to be with Nico at the hospital and I had to undergo a series of uncomfortable tests, all for what? I still was not in pain, all I wanted to know was if the baby was okay or not. The maternity emergency room was overflowing with women who looked much worse off than me. After waiting for almost six hours and not being seen by the on call gynecologist, I told the doctor and nurses that I was going home. They insisted that I come back immediately upon feeling more bleeding or pain which I promised I would.

That night, when we returned from the hospital, I began to feel it.

At first it was mild, but soon it was strong enough to literally knock me off my feet. I felt like there was a parasite inside me trying to tear its way out by ripping me apart one organ at a time. I couldn't focus on anything else, I was drenched with sweat from head to toe, I thought I was going to die. Somehow I managed to fall in and out of sleep that night. The next morning was a little better, but not by much. I was hurting so badly that I could not stand up straight. I threw up several times; I was shaking from pain and fear. I spent Friday between the bathroom, and my bed and heating pad.

On Saturday, I was sitting in the shower, letting the water rush over me like a massage blanket of warmth, when the reality of my situation hit me. Pedro was doing a wonderful job holding down the title of Super Dad, but I felt completely useless. After having all this pride in my accomplishments as a KUL Mom, suddenly I couldn't go to work, I couldn't take care of Nico, I couldn't cook, or clean; the overpowering guilt was almost as bad as the stomach cramps. I cried for a long time, wondering why I was still feeling bad.

I finally started to pray. Not that I had not been doing so before, but recently, my prayers had become more like half-hearted cries of anguish than conversations with my creator. I decided to thank God for the good things in my life, and for the things that were happening that I could not understand. I thanked Him for the brief moments of relief that I would feel throughout the day, for Pedro (who was doing everything in his power to take care of me and everything else), for the people at church who were praying for me, and for my perfect little Nico. Needless to say, I made it through the rest of the day.

Later that night we went back to the emergency room where there were much less women. In fives hours, they had examined me, and confirmed that my uterus was empty and that I had likely expelled the fetus during a spell of painful bleeding.

A lot of people wrongfully assume that just because a mother is young, she would be happy if an unexpected pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. They think that she will be grateful, or relieved, but that was not my experience.

I felt no feelings of joy, or giddiness.

A lot of people wrongfully assume that every woman who goes through a miscarriage will be overcome with depression and guilt. They think that she will be convinced that it was her fault, or that she will never want to try for another baby again, but that was not my experience.

I felt no feelings of great sadness.

I felt humbled, and more than anything, I felt like God was in control.

There is not a certain way we are supposed to react to losing a baby. There is no book that explains what you are going to go through and what emotions you should be feeling. Many people might tell you that you "dodged a bullet" or that "that child will never get the chance to be alive."

I just want to be clear. No one is allowed to judge you for what is in your heart.
